Crik: Hawke loses fight for life

Former Australian Test cricketer NEIL HAWKE has died in Adelaide after a long illness.

One of South Australia's most respected sportsmen, Mr HAWKE passed away at Mary Potter
Hospice yesterday afternoon, after battling a series of health problems arising from an
infection he suffered in 1980.

The successful state footballer and talented golfer was 61.

In a statement his wife BEVERLEY said her husband had showed courage in his fight for
life, recovering from the brink of death a number of times.

Mr HAWKE was a powerful right-arm fast-medium bowler, who took 91 wickets in 27 Tests
for Australia and made 2,067 runs as a Sheffield Shield batsman.

Also a skilful Australian Rules footballer, who played for Port Adelaide and West Torrens,
Mr HAWKE was a star member of the South Australian team that beat Victoria for the first
time at the MCG in 1963.

A memorial service will be held at 11.30am on Friday, December 29, at the Paradise
Assemblies of God Church following a private cremation.
