NSW: Sydney Anglicans ask would-be ministers about sex history
SYDNEY, April 1 AAP - One of Australia's largest churches is vetting the sexual experience
of members wishing to join its Sydney ministry in an eight-page questionnaire.
Sydney Anglican Archbishop Peter Jensen today said anyone wanting to become a new priest
in the Sydney diocese or transferring to its priesthood from another area had to complete
the questionnaire.
Taking about 20 minutes to fill in, it covered various aspects of candidates' sexual
history including abuse of children and use of pornography.
Questions also targeted involvement in the occult, misuse of drugs, maltreatment of
animals, criminal conduct, driving convictions, and financial conduct such as misappropriation
of funds.
"No-one is forced to do it, unless they wish to become a member of the clergy in this
diocese," Dr Jensen said.
He said the questionnaire was an expansion of an earlier version, and was based on
Canadian and English models.
