QLD: CJC plots home robbery hotspots

Queensland's fighter of official corruption, the Criminal Justice Commission, is using
its powers to help police reduce home robberies.

The CJC chose the Beenleigh area just south of Brisbane because of its high break-in
rate to trial a robbery analysis system in conjunction with local police.

CJC researcher DENNIS BUDZ says the CJC's crime hotspot identification system is allowing
police to identify localised burglary flashpoints.

The CJC found Beenleigh households had a one in 12 chance of being robbed but that
rose to a one in six chance of being robbed a second time.

Mr BUDZ says computers have identified hotspots earlier than traditional analytical
methods, allowing police to take preventative action.

CJC chairman BRENDAN BUTLER says the project had gained national recognition.
