Fed: Australia an "embarrassment" on climate: green groups

Canberra's ruled out making deep cuts to greenhouse gas emissions until at least 2020
.. a decision that's been branded an embarrassment by dismayed environmentalists.

The federal government yesterday announced it's setting a target of five per cent by
2020 and will only go to a 15 per cent maximum .. if the world strikes a deal on climate
change.

The decision flies in the face of calls by scientists for emissions to be slashed by
up to 40 per cent .. to avert catastrophic climate change.

But Prime Minister KEVIN RUDD says Australia's 2020 target is realistic.
