Vic: Vic government welcomes race law debate

MELBOURNE, Feb 22 AAP - The Victorian government has welcomed vigorous debate on contentious
issues contained in its proposed racial vilification laws.

Multicultural Affairs Minister John Pandazopoulos said that while some groups, like
the Catholic Church and the RSL, were concerned about parts of the legislation, it was
time Victoria came into line with other states and introduced such laws.

Catholic Archbishop George Pell told the Herald Sun newspaper today that he opposed
vilification, but strongly supported free speech.
